Training a Future Work Force

Members of the Brantford-Hamilton-Niagara Sheet Metal Contractors Association (BHN-SM) and Hamilton Local 537 are committed to training the next generation of tradespeople. All apprentices within that system are monitored by the Joint Apprenticeship Council (JAC), composed of volunteer contractors and Local 537 members. The Joint Apprenticeship Council has developed an outstanding apprenticeship program that builds on the foundation of the provincial apprenticeship program and includes:

An annual interview with each apprentice involving the review of (1) their Training Standards Manual, (2) on-the-job performance, (3) progress at trade school, and (4) current safety training
Tutoring services to ensure trade school success
Preparation and monitoring of these apprentices to successfully complete the Certificate of Qualification
Ensuring each apprentice maintains current membership in the Ontario College of Trades

Sheet Metal Apprentice Requirements:

Valid driver’s license
High school diploma or GED
Grade 12 technical math
Resume and transcripts
SIN card, or a T4
Training agreement (if you already have one)

Safety & Skills Training – Investing in our Workforce

Members of the Brantford-Hamilton-Niagara Sheet Metal Contractors Association (BHN-SM) financially support training. This WRTF provides safety and skills training for the workforce at no additional cost to contractors. Members of BHN-SM and SMW-Local 537 are very proactive in ensuring the workforce is skilled and safety-conscious.

Mandatory training for apprentices in their apprenticeship program:

WHMIS
Working at Heights
MOL Safety Awareness for Workers
Elevated Work Platforms (Scissor & Boom)
